So you have your CBD oil for pets or CBD dog treats in hand, and are now asking what many pet owners are wondering...
We understand how it feels, we’ve been there too. Don’t worry, we’ll provide you with what we know as the best practices for CBD and your pet for now. But remember, CBD is still very new so these suggestions can change or become outdated as more research is done.
But for now, these suggestions should definitely help you start your CBD journey with your pet!
That is one of the most popular questions amongst pet owners learning about CBD. So what’s the answer?
CBD is a natural supplement so just like any other supplement, or medication as a matter of fact, it varies depending on a multitude of factors. Your pet’s breed, weight, and health condition all play a part in answering this.
However, there is an important “rule” to keep in mind, no matter what you determine the best dosage is for your pet!
And that “rule” is to always start with a low dosage!
Whatever you deem to be the right dose for your pet, you should start at a fraction of that dose. Then from there, increase the dose slowly until you see the optimal benefit for your dog, cat, or other pet.
A standard some people use to start is 0.25mg per pound of your pet’s body weight.
That means if you have a tiny 10 pound Maine Coon, you’ll be giving him/her 2.5mg of CBD. And if you have a 40 pound lab, he/she will be getting 10mg of CBD.
10lbs x 0.25mg = 2.5mg of CBD
This is a general formula that some pet owners use for CBD in the beginning. Then as your pet gets used to taking it, you can slowly increase it.
We recommend increasing the dose by a certain number of drops, every couple of days for the first week or two. By doing this, you will see what is working for your pet best.
Pet parents usually stay under 0.5mg of CBD per pound of their pet. So if you find a nice happy medium in between 0.25mg and 0.5mg that’s great!
This is really a trial and error process for each pet and pet owner. So as we mentioned, start with a low dose and slowly increase from there until you find what works best for your pet!
Depending on where you buy your CBD products from, the product’s potency will vary from 100mg to 1000mg. For example, Ahimsa Pets sells 250mg, 500mg, and 1000mg CBD oil for pets and 300mg and 600mg CBD dog treats. So make sure you do the math as to how much of the dropper your dog should get.
Side effects are not seen often in CBD since it is a natural supplement. But even if you give a little more than needed to your pet, there are very mild symptoms (dry mouth, lethargy, etc) – so don’t be too worrisome. However, do make sure you keep your pet’s health in mind and give a proper dose right from the beginning!
We hope this article has helped ease your questions about how much CBD oil to give your pet.
As mentioned, CBD is still very new and research is being done constantly, so this information may change over time. Check back to see if we’ve updated anything in the future!
